URBAN DECAY EYESHADOW PRIMER POTION (Original Packaging) – Review, Photos & Swatches
As most of you may know, this packaging is quite old but these can be found at numerous places online. I found mine at Hautelook – Urban Decay sales are quite frequent and will prompt on the site when they are available again. I have yet to purchase the newly packaged primer potions as soon as I am through with these babies. Since these are much cheaper than the new primer potions, it would be best for those who haven’t tried Urban Decay’s best-selling eyeshadow primers.
Both original and new packaging come in 4 shades:
- Original (sheer nude; almost invisible)
- Greed (pearly gold)
- Sin (shimmering champagne)
- Eden (tawny matte nude)
Problems & Difference between Original and New Packaging
The difference between the original and new packaging is the genie bottle with a doe-foot applicator (0.34oz) and the easy-to-squeeze tube (0.37oz). The doe-foot applicators are perfect for personal use since they touch your eyelids and can cause bacteria to transfer into your makeup. A downfall of this product is that you are not able to control how much product will come out at each use. On the other hand, the easy-to-squeeze tubes are great for sanitary purposes and you are able to control how much product you want to squeeze out.
A problem that many have with the old packaging is that the doe-foot applicator does not completely remove the entire product in the tube. Thus, we waste a lot of product that sticks to the bottom of the bottle. This may be a reason that Urban Decay released the new squeeze tubes. For those who don’t want to waste their makeup there are various tutorials on YouTube to cut open the bottle to consume the remaining product.
My Thoughts
After continuously testing the primers, I found different usages and created personal opinions about each color:
Original
- Has an invisible finish (does NOT change color of your lids)
- Makes eyeshadows appear more vibrant
- Works best for people with oily eye lids
Greed
- Has a pearly gold finish
- Helps matte colors have a slight pearly sheen to them
- Can be used alone as its own eyeshadow color
- Slightly helps shimmery eyeshadows appear more vibrant
- Great for highlight color (brow bones and cheek bones)
Sin
- Has a shimmery champagne finish
- Makes eyeshadows appear a lot more shimmery
- Can be used alone as its own eyeshadow color
- Can be overpowering on lids; use little product at a time
- Great for highlight color (brow bones and cheek bones)
Eden
- Has a matte/nude finish (no shimmer)
- Slightly mattifies shimmery eyeshadows
- Has a thick consistency compared to the original; little goes a long way
- Can be used to even out discoloration on lids
- Great under eye concealer for fair skin tones
After trying all of the primer potions, I noticed that all worked well with me. I have oily/combination skin so my lids tend to get slightly oily, thus creasing my eyeshadows. The primer potions are long wearing and do prevent any creasing that would have occurred if my eyeshadows were used alone. Since Eden has a thicker consistency, if it were applied too thick, there may have been some creasing that might have taken place. I definitely recommend applying little-at-a-time for all primer potions; little goes a long way.
Out of the four, my least favorite is Sin. It is a gorgeous champagne color but I found it to be way too shimmery for my liking used as an entire base color. In my opinion, it would be best used as its own eyeshadow color or as a highlight. When it’s used as an entire base color, it makes my skin look oilier than it is which can be unflattering. I would definitely recommend this to be used as a highlight color for those with oily skin like myself.
What are your thoughts of the Urban Decay Primer Potion?
